Jobs & Salaries

The basic job of the IT employee is to help organizations share and store information through networks, including the internet, and databases. Network engineers set up LANs, WANs and intranets, whereas Network Administrators design, install and support computer systems, often being called on to trouble-shoot for other employees. There are also database administrators, telecommunications specialists, webmasters and computer security specialists, all of which fall under Information Technology. The salaries for these types of jobs fall roughly between $66,000 and $92,000 (

Prerequisites & Coursework

Information Technology employees are often required to have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science, management information systems, or, of course, information technology. Courses include computer science and programming, computer engineering, mathematics and statistics, systems design, database management and systems security. For entry into any of these programs, it is helpful to have a substantial background with computers and various commonly used programming languages.
